Top 12 Most Memorable Encounters
Coming off a spectacularly lucky (photographically) year, 2017 was a no good, awful, downright miserable stretch of bad luck. Though we spent more time in the field than ever, we captured content only about 10% of the time we set out to look for wildlife. Yet for all the bad luck, we had some incredible moments – and, based on our last two forays into the Rockies, our luck also seems to be changing. Here’s hoping 2018 is the best year yet.
The Big Boars
Okay, we’re cheating a little here. This wasn’t one moment, but two: Twice we had the chance to encounter big, beautiful grizzly boars that are rarely seen. The first was Banff’s most infamous bear – The Boss, grizzly 122. We’ve had the chance to observe him in the past, but on this particular April morning, we had him to ourselves and in a setting where he didn’t pay us any attention. In other words, it was just the way you want to encounter a bear.
The second boar we found while on route from Waterton to Jasper with Jill’s family. Only two other cars were stopped on the little-travelled road and each of us quietly marvelled at the sight of one of the biggest grizzlies we ever seen devour dandelions in perfect mid-morning overcast light. I don’t know how many more chances we’ll have to see either bear, but in what was a bad bear year, we were thankful for these moments.
