When Yellowstone grizzly bear Raspberry showed up with her two cubs of the year in 2015, Amy Gerber, a wonderful wildlife photographer and good friend, noticed that one of them had very distinctive ‘mask’ markings around his eyes and, in truth, resembled a raccoon. And with that, the cub became known to the world as Rocky. Many people believed that the five-month-old was a he and while most were focused its loveable and strikingly beautiful sibling, Snow, I was head over heels for this little guy. So when news trickled out of Yellowstone in September that Raspberry had appeared again, but with only one cub, I was heartbroken to learn Rocky had died. I’ll always remember him as the cub who loved standing more than sitting and brought more joy to my life than you can possibly imagine. Dear, sweet Rocky, you’ll be missed.
