Banff might be known as the heart of the Canadian Rockies, but I think its lesser known cousin to the south, Kananaskis Country, is where you can find the range’s true heartbeat. Less popular means fewer people, but it doesn’t mean the views are any less spectacular. This photograph was taken from one of my favourite places in the expansive, provincially-managed, multi-use area: Lower Kananaskis Lake. The campground we frequent, Interlakes, is just behind me in this shot, making the view essentially one that we wake up to in our tent every morning. On this night, having finally slewed the curse of the weasel, we returned to camp only to find this stunning sunset over the craggy peaks and drifting thunderheads. And when two kayakers returned from a perfect night on the water, I had to attempt a perfect image to capture the moment. It’s far from perfect, of course, but still beautiful to me.
