Grizzly sows, more often than not, are so focused on feeding and teaching their cubs, they rarely have the patience for play. Though bears, like all animals, express love and joy, it’s rarely documented. But when we found this sow and cub of the year on Kananaskis Country’s Highwood Pass in the summer of 2012, we were treated to an incredible moment of tenderness. It was getting dark and the image is both grainy and cropped; however, I felt fortunate to freeze this second in time in the hopes of helping people see a side of grizzlies many don’t know or understand. Hopefully it can inspire a few people to take a second look at these bruins and better learn to co-exist.
