When you drive east from the Jasper townsite, there is a small stream that I believe is nicknamed ‘Glory Hole’. It must be part of Rocky River, which spills into the Athabasca below Roche Miette, but for the life of me I cannot confirm if it is an arm of the river or not. Nonetheless, this little stream of water is one of my favourite spots in the world. The water is almost always calm and reflective and is in an area where we’ve found bull elk, bighorn rams, mountain goats, wolves and cougar. To me it symbolizes the wild, even though it is bisected by one of Canada’s two transnational highways. If you find it, I encourage you to stop and appreciate this oasis, especially as the sun sets, for you won’t find many vistas more beautiful than this one.
